Angel Mendoza grew up in a Latino community in Los Angeles. Inspired by the Aztec mural painted walls in his neighborhood, Mendoza first understood an indigenous past unmatched by anything he would ever find in the schools’ history books.
Now, Mendoza creates art through a Mesoamerican graffiti lens that gives life to objects by decorating them with the combined rich symbols of the ancient and modern Americas.
The making of art has occupied a special position among human activities in the modern era. Some might rank the making of art as the highest of all callings. Many likely think of it as “mere commerce,” but Angel Mendoza views the act as a vital link to our past.
